Boys’ Hockey

Midstream hockey has grown in leaps and bounds since our inception in 2007 and we are a reckoned competitor in Gauteng and beyond. In the last season we fielded seven sides over three leagues, where we have made a good account of ourselves. Our A-teams placed 5th, our B-teams 6th and even our u/16C team did well in a league where the teams of the other schools kept changing.

Over the years we have demonstrated our progress on levels of play and coaching, as we have moved up through the leagues. We embrace the ever-changing game of hockey, the ever-improving methods of coaching and advancing relevant skill sets. We relish the opportunity to introduce this wonderful game to one and all.

We are blessed in having a wonderful synthetic surface, with lights, to compliment the manicured grass fields, which affords us the capacity to host many matches at home.

Our hockey season starts officially just before the April holidays when we take our annual tours. Practically, however, we like to start with pre-season fitness training, particularly for our players who are neither athletes, nor swimmers.

The hockey season kicks off with the Gauteng Cup, played over the weekend before the start of the league. The season is punctuated by many derby matches, in amongst our league fixtures, where we are continually searching to find competition that will extend and challenge the status quo. Many of these derby matches are against schools which are outside of the province. The matches which are the highlights for our players, however, are rival neighbours of course. The likes of the Cornwall Hill, Southdowns, PBHS and AHS derbies evoke the greatest passion and crowd.

The top tier schools against which we compete are listed below in no particular order: Pretoria Boys High School, Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool, Hoërskool Waterkloof, Hoërskool Menlopark, St Albans College, Hoërskool Garsfontein, Cornwall Hill College, Hoërskool Eldoraigne and Hoërskool Zwartkop. We have consistently managed, over the past number of years, to have more than a couple of players selected to represent the province each season.

Continuous effort — not strength or intelligence — is the key to unlocking our potential.

– Liane Cardes

Girls’ Hockey

Girls Hockey

Hockey at Midstream College is taken seriously and a professional approach is followed. The season starts in January with pre-season preparations, focused on conditioning and skills training.

Background

Girls’ hockey has grown over the past thirteen years, becoming bigger and stronger and we look to the future with great anticipation. The astro turf and our growing number of teams are great accomplishments. We participate in the Northern Blues Big Schools’ League. Every girl who wants to play hockey will be given the opportunity to be part of a team and each team has its own coach.

Hockey courses are attended by all the teams in the March/April holidays and during the off-season, clinics are offered. Emphasis is placed on basic skills and conditioning.

2019 Hockey

The 2019 hockey season can be summarised by the words of Michael Jordan: “Talent will win matches, but teamwork will win championships.”

Midstream College plays in the top league and we have maintained our position in the league coming fifth. Mention must be made of our u/14A, u/15A and u/16A teams that participated in the Noordvaal competition during the July holidays. History was once again made by the u/15A team that progressed to play in the Noordvaal tournament.

“Every great achievement begins with the intention to try.” – Vincent van Gogh

Individually, our players performed very well and we are proud of the following provincial players: Daina Graham, Charlie Sambo, Nomalanga Langa, Megan Heher, Drew Goatley, Zoë Sheriffs, Kayleigh Gourrah, Andrea Roberts, Ashley Williams, Noluthando Khomo and Veronica du Plessis. Two of our u/14 girls were chosen for the u/14 Gauteng development team, i.e. Miané Lessing and Marli Liebenberg.

Andrea Roberts was selected for the SA u/16 high performance training squad – another first for Midstream.

2020 Hockey
