He who wants to persuade should put his trust not in the right argument, but in the right word. The power of sound has always been greater than the power of sense.
– Joseph Conrad
Public speaking is a skill that can be acquired by anyone. One can learn how to speak and present oneself. Public speaking at Midstream College has gone from strength to strength in the past decade and our learners have done us extremely proud. We offer our learners the opportunity to convincingly and confidently take a stance. We are constantly investigating more competitions for our speakers. Subsequently we have added two more.
1. INTERNAL ORATORS
In this competition we offer our learners the opportunity to orate in English and/or Afrikaans. At the end of each section an overall winner (both senior and junior; Afrikaans and English) is announced.
It is compulsory for learners to participate in the Internal Competitions prior to being considered for external public speaking competitions.
2. GAUTENG NORTH VAN HUYSSTEENS ORATORS’ FESTIVAL
Schools enter their best speakers and teams for this competition. They are entered per grade, per language (English, Afrikaans and bilingual). At the end of the first round schools are notified which three teams or individuals in each category will compete in the final round. The overall winners for each category are then announced at a very prestigious gala occasion.
3. ATKV ORATORS’ COMPETITION
The ATKV offers a national public speaking competition for Afrikaans Home Language and Afrikaans Additional Language speakers. Midstream College falls within the Gauteng North region. At the end of the first round the best learners in the province progress to the semi-final where the provincial winners are announced. The latter are then invited to the final which is annually held at one of the ATKV’s much sought after holiday resorts. Midstream College has been privileged enough to have a speaker in five finals and twice we have been victorious.
4. PRETORIA PUBLIC SPEAKING FESTIVAL
This competition offers a public speaking opportunity to both individuals and teams. The competition is aimed at English Home Language and Afrikaans Additional speakers, but Afrikaans speaking learners may also participate in the English Home Language sections. This competition takes place in May.
5. PRIVATE SCHOOLS ENGLISH PUBLIC SPEAKING FESTIVAL
This English public speaking competition is open to individual speakers in any private school and takes place in March.
6. OPPIE-TONG-AF PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION
This is a new competition that Midstream College is going to participate in. It accommodates both home language and additional language speakers of both English and Afrikaans. It takes place in the third term.
